OIL PAINTING from the Carlson Art Gallery in Sausalito: I teach private students, or small groups on location. Experience the splendor of plein air painting and seeing luminous color on the landscape. Light creates color, and the color notes create light. The artist’s challenge is to mix these notes on a palette to create a composition. You will learn how to capture light and atmosphere in expressing your own vision. Tailor learning to your own pace with a materials list. We will visit fantastic locations in the Bay Area. Shifting light is my passion; I am constantly studying to become a better painter. I believe that truthful observation, painting outdoors is the greatest teacher. I look to the lineage of Henry Hensche, the California Six, John Singer Sargeant, as well as the California and French Impressionist School.

The French Connection: From Impressionism to Bay Area Modernism

This class explores the rich lineage of European painting with life stories that formed the roots of Bay Area culture. Through informed narrative, colored slides, and lively discussion, we will analyze and follow the influence French art had on Diebenkorn, Park, Theibaud, and Bischoff. I taught The French Connection for the College of Marin and Sausalito Village, and am available teach it at other venues.
