“Three Painters, Life in Color”

The Exhibition “Three painters, Life in Color” features the work of three award-winning Marin artists, Marin Open Studios founder Kay Carlson and Marin Art School principles Dorallen Davis and Jane Heaphy. They are combining their work in oil landscapes, portraits, and still lives in the colorist tradition of California.

The three friends have made painting their way of life. They have an active engagement with the visible world, and paint from life both indoors and outdoors.  All of them have traveled and painted together throughout Marin, Napa Sonoma wine country, and Tuscany.

Dorallen Davis and Jane Heaphy challenge one another to work in a fast, “alla prima” fashion. Their portraits are incisive, impressionist studies of people. Dorallen Davis has a deft ability to capture the essence of character in her portraits. Still lives are elegant images of florals and random objects made beautiful by contrast of dark and light.

Jane Heaphy uses oil paint with a formal power. Her landscapes invite us to walk beyond the road, to delve into the mystery of what is beyond the next road. Her technical expertise is evident in compositions that explore light on the land.

Kay Carlson presents paintings from her marina studio, and Tuscany,  where she and Dorallen painted in autumn of 2007.  Kay finds her inspiration from Seldon Gile, and chooses locations that have a certain wildness.  Her palette is vibrant with scarlet autumn vines and the yellowness of spring fields in the wind.

This exhibition draws the viewer into the artists’ world of light and shadow, to see with emotional vitality, life in color.
